Hybrid Roofing Insulation Systems - and Why They Matter
Hybrid Roofing Insulation Systems - and Why They Matter
HD Composite Hybrid Roof Insulation
Two is often better than one. Whether it’s combining strengths on a team or pairing complementary materials, the right combination can deliver better results than a single solution alone.
Hybrid roofing insulation follows the same principle—combining the strengths of multiple insulation types into one high-performance system. By pairing polyisocyanurate (polyiso) insulation’s high R-values with cost-effective expanded polystyrene (EPS) rigid foam insulation, contractors can meet code-required R-values while reducing overall costs.
As an added benefit, EPS delivers one of the highest R-values per dollar, and its thermal performance remains stable over time (no thermal drift). This creates a reliable, long-term foundation for hybrid roofing systems.
While hybrid insulation systems can take several forms, the combination of EPS and polyiso stands out for both performance and efficiency.
Tapered EPS + Polyiso Hybrid Systems
Combining Insulfoam’s tapered EPS insulation with a top layer of polyiso creates an efficient, cost-effective solution for sloped roof assemblies. Tapered EPS can be manufactured in thicknesses up to 40'' and customized to meet specific drainage requirements. Therefore, tapered EPS can often be installed in fewer layers, crews use less adhesive and spend less time handling and installing materials. This simplifies installation and reduces labor costs. Moreover, when slope is required to achieve positive drainage, this hybrid approach delivers the performance of polyiso with the cost and installation advantages of EPS. The result is a streamlined system that improves efficiency and supports stronger project margins.

EPS Flute-Fill + Polyiso for Metal Retrofit Roofs
Hybrid systems are equally effective in metal roof recover applications. In these cases, EPS can be used as flute-fill insulation, fitting precisely between standing seams, with a layer of polyiso installed above.
Insulfoam Flute-Fill can be factory-cut, square, tapered, or profile-cut, to match the exact geometry of the roof. This eliminates the need for time-consuming field cutting and speeds up installation.
Once installed, the flute-fill creates a smooth, continuous surface for the polyiso layer. According to Carlisle SynTec Systems, polyiso “provides energy-efficient solutions for buildings in any region and climate, as well as outstanding return on investment and significant energy savings.” Paired with EPS, the system delivers a durable, energy-efficient assembly that supports long-term performance and reduced operating costs.
