Geofoam for Structural Infrastructure Projects
Insulfoam® GF (Geofoam) is a lightweight, engineered geosynthetic fill material made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) designed to solve complex infrastructure challenges where conventional soil fill creates risk, due to its tendency to shift, settle, absorb moisture and add lateral load to neighboring structures. Geofoam is chiefly used as an alternative fill (over dirt, shredded tires, cellular concrete, wood chips, basalt etc.) to improve soil stability, reduce lateral loads and when earthen fill is expensive to bring in.
Designed for Structural & Geotechnical Engineered Applications
Insulfoam GF meets or exceeds the requirements of ASTM D6817 for rigid cellular polystyrene geofoam and delivers predictable, long-term performance as an engineered structural fill material. Unlike soil-based fills, Geofoam does not consolidate or settle over time, providing dimensional stability and consistent support throughout the life of the structure. The material resists moisture absorption, freeze–thaw cycles, insects, mold, and decomposition, and it maintains a stable R-value over time. Geofoam is also 100% recyclable and manufactured without HCFCs or formaldehyde.
Because Geofoam weighs approximately 1–3 lb/ft³, which is a fraction of what traditional soil weighs, it reduces vertical and lateral stresses in geotechnical and civil engineering applications. This load reduction helps control settlement, limits differential movement, and alleviates the need for surcharging, preloading, or staged construction.
Geofoam is widely used in infrastructure projects constructed over weak or compressible soils, in tight right-of-way conditions, and in urban environments where excavation limits and adjacent structures demand precise load control.
