Using EPS Geofoam as a slab infill over traditional fill as the aggregate base course (ABC) provided the following benefits to the contractor:
- Estimated job savings of $7,000
- Reduced construction scheduled by 4-5 days
- Reduced man hours/labor costs due to reduced construction schedule
- Eliminated the need of 1,050 tons of ABC traditional fill delivery
The use of EPS geofoam under the slab helps keep vertical settlements down as the contractor can balance the excavation and depth of foam to keep the net increase in pressure under control.

EPS geofoam is approximately 1% the weight of soil and less than 10% the weight of other lightweight fill alternatives. As a lightweight fill, EPS geofoam reduces the loads imposed on adjacent and underlying soils and structures. Utilizing EPS geofoam benefits construction schedules and lowers the overall cost of construction due to it’s ease of handling during construction….often without the need for special equipment, and is unaffected by occurring weather conditions.
